The Deputy Consul General of Pakistan in New York, Umar Sheikh, recently participated in a ceremony in Queens celebrating the 78th Independence Day of Pakistan. Hosted by Queens Borough President Donovan Richards Jr. and organized with the support of the American Pakistani Advocacy Group (APAG), the event brought together elected officials, community leaders, and a large contingent of Pakistani-Americans from throughout Queens.
During his address, Umar Sheikh extended heartfelt congratulations to the Pakistani community and praised Queens for its dynamic diversity and inclusive spirit, which has earned it the title of the “World’s Borough.” He highlighted the significant role Pakistani-Americans play in bridging relations between Pakistan and the United States, citing their contributions in business, education, public service, and civic engagement as examples of their impact.
Sheikh dedicated this year’s Independence Day to the bravery and dedication of Pakistan’s Armed Forces, referencing the country’s success in Operation “Bunyan al-Marsous” as evidence of Pakistan’s steadfast determination to safeguard its sovereignty. He paid tribute to the sacrifices of martyrs, veterans, and their families, emphasizing their enduring inspiration to the Pakistani people.
The celebrations included cultural performances and messages of support for Pakistan from city officials. Umar Sheikh expressed his gratitude to Borough President Richards, the APAG, and its leader Ali Rashid for their ongoing collaboration with the Pakistani Consulate and their commitment to fostering unity, civic engagement, and a positive image of the Pakistani-American community in New York City.
