IWMI joins Pakistan and UK to launch the Green Compact, accelerating climate action, policy engagement and access to climate finance.

The International Water Management Institute (IWMI) team, led by Mohsin Hafeez, Strategic Program Director for Water, Food & Ecosystems, took part in the launch of the Green Compact in Islamabad where the agreement between Pakistan and the UK was formalised by Musadik Masood Malik and Baroness Chapman. The Green Compact marks the start of an enhanced climate partnership designed to deepen collaboration on climate-resilient development.

The Green Compact aims to accelerate climate action by drawing on UK expertise to strengthen policy engagement, scale up climate-resilient development and expand opportunities for skills, trade, investment and access to climate finance. The timing of the initiative is significant for Pakistan as it grapples with mounting climate pressures and seeks practical pathways to bolster resilience.

IWMI hosted a visibility booth at the event that attracted senior officials from both governments. The British High Commissioner in Pakistan, Jane Marriott, visited the booth and engaged with the IWMI team while Mohsin Hafeez briefed dignitaries on IWMI’s work. He highlighted the Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office-funded Water Resource Accountability in Pakistan WRAP Programme, which is supporting climate-resilient solutions to strengthen water governance across the country.

The launch provided important networking opportunities and raised IWMI’s profile within the evolving UK–Pakistan climate partnership. By linking water governance initiatives like the WRAP programme with the objectives of the Green Compact, stakeholders in Islamabad hope to unlock technical support, finance and collaborative projects that can translate into tangible resilience gains for vulnerable communities.
