RAWALPINDI: Pakistan Citizen Rights Movement (PCRM) Chairman Zaheer Ahmed Awan has expressed serious concern over the deteriorating sanitation situation in Union Council 43, Dhok Khaba, in the inner city, saying that the poor state of cleanliness has raised questions about the performance of Suthra Punjab.
In a statement, he said garbage accumulated in open plots was causing stench and foul smell, besides becoming a breeding ground for flies and mosquitoes. He said repeated complaints had failed to bring about proper cleanliness measures, which reflected poorly on the performance of the relevant institutions.
Mr Awan demanded that the educational qualifications, expertise in environmental sciences and professional experience of Suthra Punjab operational officers should be examined, and that merit should be ensured instead of political recommendations.
The PCRM demanded immediate removal of garbage from open plots, replacement of damaged dustbins, repair of smoke-emitting vehicles and sanitation machinery, and accountability of officials responsible for negligence.
Mr Awan also appealed to citizens to take part in cleanliness efforts on a self-help basis, dispose of garbage in dustbins and identify filthy spots in their areas.
He said public cooperation was essential for cleanliness, but government institutions could not be allowed to neglect their basic responsibilities.
