Mangrove Afforestation and Carbon Credits in Sindh

Transparency International Pakistan (TI-P) and the Sindh Forest Department have partnered to boost journalists’ understanding of mangrove afforestation projects and the emerging carbon credit market in Sindh. Through TI-P’s Journalist Fellowship on Climate Governance and Finance, this collaboration aims to enhance transparency and accountability in climate finance and carbon markets by enabling informed and responsible reporting.

Under this partnership, TI-P will organize an exposure session alongside the Sindh Forest Department, specifically designed to educate journalists on the critical role mangrove ecosystems play in environmental restoration efforts and climate change mitigation. The training will focus on mangrove afforestation—which has emerged as a vital natural solution for increasing climate resilience—and related issues surrounding carbon credits.

The Sindh Forest Department has long been at the forefront of mangrove restoration initiatives within the province, significantly contributing to regional efforts aimed at addressing climate change and environmental degradation. These ecosystems serve as natural defense barriers against rising sea levels, support biodiversity conservation, and are increasingly important due to their ability to capture and store carbon dioxide, providing valuable opportunities in emerging carbon markets.

Transparency International Pakistan is committed to deepening public awareness and accountability within climate governance and carbon financing. Through collaborations such as these, TI-P seeks to build journalistic capacity, thereby fostering accurate, transparent, and responsible media coverage relating to climate adaptation and financial mechanisms.
