National Press Club Islamabad and the Pakistan Federal Union of Journalists Workers jointly held a memorial reference in Islamabad to honor senior journalist and former RIUJ Workers president Mazhar Iqbal, drawing a large gathering of journalists from the twin cities along with the deceased’s relatives and friends.

The proceedings were moderated by RIUJ secretary Hamidullah Abid. Speakers paying tribute to Mazhar Iqbal included PFUJ Barna president Afzal Butt, National Press Club secretary Nayyer Ali, RIUJ president Tariq Ali Wark, PFUJ Workers president Dr. Saadia Kamal, PFUJ Dastoor head Haji Nawaz Raza, APNEC president Sadiq Anzar, Javed Malik and others who remembered his service to the profession.

Speakers emphasized that Mazhar Iqbal dedicated his life to defending freedom of expression and protecting the rights of media workers. They praised his tireless efforts and courageous stance, saying his contributions to journalism and labour rights will not be forgotten. Many recalled his persistent call for unity among press organisations to end factional divisions and to launch a joint movement for employees’ welfare.

Participants noted that the coming together of multiple journalistic bodies on a single platform reflected Mazhar Iqbal’s long-held desire, a step they said would bring consolation to his memory. His son Nauman Mazhar and daughter-in-law Zoya Nauman shared personal recollections of the late journalist, moving attendees to tears.

The programme concluded with prayers for the departed offered by journalist Shabbir Usmani, as colleagues and friends reiterated their commitment to continue Mazhar Iqbal’s work for press freedom and workers’ rights.
