Women University Mardan has marked an important academic achievement as Ms. Khadija successfully completed her research on wastewater treatment under the supervision of Dr. Hina Jabeen in the Department of Biotechnology.
The research project, titled Synergistic Effect of Microalgae and Bacteria for the Remediation of Domestic Wastewater, examined how microalgae and beneficial bacteria can work together to treat domestic wastewater through a biological process that is both environmentally friendly and cost-effective. The study highlighted the promise of this combined system in removing pollutants and excess nutrients while also producing biomass that may be useful in agriculture and bioenergy applications.
According to the department, the findings point toward a sustainable alternative to conventional wastewater treatment methods, especially for rural and resource-limited communities where affordable solutions are urgently needed. The research also carries wider significance for improving water quality, supporting water reuse, and helping reduce environmental pollution.
The department acknowledged the support of Worthy Vice Chancellor Prof. Dr. Razia Sultana, describing her role as important in promoting research and innovation at the university. Appreciation was also shared for Dr. Hina Jabeen’s supervision and Dr. Nadia Sharif’s technical assistance in microalgal identification, both of which contributed to the completion of the project.
To recognise the achievement, the department arranged a cake-cutting ceremony attended by faculty members, students, the Director Academics, and the Additional Director Quality Enhancement Cell. Participants praised the relevance of the research and discussed its practical uses and possible commercialization prospects.
The Department of Biotechnology said the success reflects its commitment to research that supports scientific advancement, environmental sustainability, and community development in Pakistan.
