Gender-based violence can be reduced when laws are implemented effectively and citizens are given better access to their rights, according to officials speaking at a training session in Peshawar. The Right to Information, or RTI support, was highlighted as an important legal tool that helps create a more transparent and accountable society where human rights are better protected.
Shuaib Ahmad, representing the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Information Commission, shared these views during the Capacity-Building Training for Gender Desks across Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, organized by the non-governmental organization Mera Ghar-Net in collaboration with the Social Welfare Department, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. He said RTI can play a practical role in preventing gender-based violence by helping people, especially those from marginalized groups, access information about opportunities, legal support, public services and policies linked to human rights.
He noted that RTI support strengthens equal citizenship by making information more accessible to men and women alike, regardless of social background. According to him, when people can easily learn about available services and legal remedies, they are better equipped to protect themselves and demand their rights at the grassroots level.
Mr. Ahmad also conveyed the commission’s willingness to assist Gender Desks through specialized RTI training and by providing RTI application forms. He said this step would help strengthen the demand for information at the local level and improve public awareness about rights-based services across Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.
