NCCIA opens an inquiry into misleading social media posts targeting easypaisa bank limited, as the bank rejects false claims and assures users.

The National Cyber Crime Investigation Agency has begun an easypaisa inquiry after complaints over alleged false and misleading social media content targeting easypaisa bank limited on digital platforms during the past two weeks.

The complaint was submitted by Mr Naresh Kumar Aruwani, Head of Country Litigation at easypaisa bank limited, who has sought legal action against individuals accused of creating and spreading content meant to damage public confidence in the bank. According to the complaint, the material being circulated has triggered unnecessary concern among users and has attempted to cast doubt on the bank’s stability.

Sources said the matter has been assigned to a senior officer at NCCIA, who has started proceedings under the Prevention of Electronic Crimes Act, 2016 to identify the people involved in producing and distributing the disputed content. The inquiry is expected to examine both the original posts and the accounts that amplified them across social media.

Mr Aruwani said the deliberate spread of false information against a regulated financial institution does not only harm the organisation involved but can also weaken confidence in the wider banking system. He added that easypaisa remains financially strong and fully operational, and expressed confidence that authorities would take appropriate legal action in response to the campaign.

easypaisa bank limited has rejected the allegations in strong terms, describing the claims as false, baseless and misleading. The bank said customer funds remain secure and its services are still fully operational. It also clarified that while some digital services experienced temporary technical disruption during the relevant period, the issue was operational in nature, was resolved quickly, and did not affect deposits or financial stability.

As Pakistan’s first mobile wallet, launched in 2008 and now one of the country’s leading digital banks regulated by the State Bank of Pakistan, easypaisa serves more than 60 million registered users nationwide. The bank said it remains committed to financial inclusion, customer protection and operational resilience while urging customers to rely only on official communications and verified regulatory updates.
