ISLAMABAD: Speakers at a plantation campaign organised by Rising Pakistan Forum at the Women Welfare and Development Centre underlined the need for practical measures to deal with the environmental impact of deforestation and climate change.
The event was attended by noted geologist and scientist Dr Adeel Nazir, Dr Abeer from the Pakistan Meteorological Department, former chairman of Pakistan Agricultural Council Dr Ghulam Ali, Mukammal Pakistan Party Chairman Mateen Hashmi, Rising Pakistan Forum President Rakhshanda Tasneem and Women Welfare and Development Centre Principal Ms Ismat Afridi.
Speaking on the occasion, Dr Adeel Nazir briefed students on the causes and prevention of pollution. He said geographical features were being affected by climate change, while the monsoon rain system had undergone changes to a dangerous extent. He said the situation could be addressed only by planting forests.
Dr Abeer of the Pakistan Meteorological Department stressed the need for practical steps to cope with the intensity of climate change caused by deforestation. She said the younger generation could prove to be the best support in this regard.
Former Pakistan Agricultural Council chairman Dr Ghulam Ali highlighted the importance of planting more fruit-bearing and food-producing plants under the Green and Clean Pakistan initiative so that the impact of climate change on food security could also be addressed.
Mukammal Pakistan Party Chairman Mateen Hashmi said that, along with forests, it was necessary for Green and Clean Pakistan to ensure the establishment of environment-friendly industries that could help prevent the emission of toxic substances.
Rising Pakistan Forum President Rakhshanda Tasneem said today’s youth were the Pakistan of tomorrow. She said if young people learnt to keep their homes and surroundings clean, Pakistan would automatically move in the right direction. She also encouraged students to plant trees and pay attention to their protection and care.
Women Welfare and Development Centre Principal Ms Ismat Afridi thanked the guests and participants for attending the event and also briefed them about the aims, objectives and performance of the institution.
Plants were distributed among students by Rising Pakistan Forum, while the guests later planted saplings.
