RAWALPINDI, Aug 28, 2026: Doctors at the Plastic Surgery Department of Holy Family Hospital Rawalpindi have successfully replanted the severed hand of a five-year-old child referred from Jhelum, marking an important medical achievement in complex trauma care.
According to sources, the child’s hand had been completely detached after being severely injured by a toka blow. He was immediately referred to Holy Family Hospital Rawalpindi and was brought to the Plastic Surgery Department on Aug 28, where doctors decided to perform emergency surgery.
A medical team led by Dr Tayyab and Dr Ambreen carried out the complex microvascular procedure and rejoined the child’s hand. During the operation, blood vessels, veins and other vital structures were restored through delicate surgical techniques to re-establish blood flow to the severed hand.
Doctors said hand replantation in a young child is an extremely complex and time-consuming procedure. They said timely referral, proper preservation of the amputated part and the availability of an expert microsurgical team play a crucial role in such cases.
The Plastic Surgery Department of Holy Family Hospital described the successful operation as an important development in the treatment of complex trauma and in the field of microsurgery.
The child has been kept under special observation after the operation, while doctors are continuously monitoring blood flow and recovery of the replanted hand.
Medical experts also urged the public that if any body part is severed in an accident, it should not be placed directly on ice. Instead, it should be kept in a clean plastic bag, and that bag should be placed in another container containing ice, while the patient should be shifted immediately to a centre equipped for microsurgery.
