Architecture shapes Pakistan's identity, says Ahsan Iqbal at IAP 2026; urges heritage preservation, sustainable construction and housing support.

Speaking at the Institute of Architects Pakistan Convention and Exhibition 2026 in Islamabad, Federal Minister for Planning, Development and Special Initiatives Ahsan Iqbal argued that architecture is a lasting symbol of a nation’s identity. He noted that while empires may fade, landmarks such as the Alhamra, Badshahi Mosque and the Taj Mahal continue to stand as representations of entire civilizations, underscoring the cultural weight of architecture.

Iqbal said architecture goes beyond simple structures and shapes lifestyles, public spaces and the character of cities. He urged practitioners to prioritise human-centered, accessible and functional design so that architecture directly improves quality of life for residents across Pakistani cities.

The minister expressed concern about the neglect of historic fabric in urban centres, pointing to Karachi’s dwindling stock of yellow-stone buildings as an example of lost urban memory. He called for a balanced approach that blends modern trends with local culture to preserve identity while meeting contemporary needs.

Highlighting environmental responsibility, Iqbal stressed the importance of sustainable construction practices and materials. He reaffirmed the government’s commitment to support low-cost housing through mortgage financing, linking accessible housing policy with better design and construction standards.

Iqbal urged closer collaboration between architects and construction firms to raise building standards and drive innovation, and he visited exhibition stalls to review ideas on display. He also assured attendees of government support for promoting local products and boosting exports, signalling a focus on both cultural preservation and economic opportunity within the architecture sector.
