Asia Pacific Group discusses regional peace and cooperation at the IPU Assembly in Istanbul with Pakistan delegation attending amid austerity measures.

Parliamentary delegates from across the region gathered on the sidelines of the Inter-Parliamentary Union Assembly in Istanbul to engage in constructive dialogue under the banner of the Asia Pacific Group. Discussions centered on peace, regional cooperation and international security, with participants emphasizing the role of parliamentary diplomacy in responding to emerging geopolitical challenges.

The Pakistan delegation included Azam Nazeer Tarar, Minister for Law and Justice, Farhan Chishti, Asad Alam Niazi, Senator Amir Waliuddin Chishti, Senator Muhammad Talha Mahmood, Syed Shamoon Hashmi and Naqash Zafar. Delegates highlighted Pakistan’s commitment to democratic values, multilateral cooperation and efforts to foster mutual understanding among Asia Pacific nations.

Speakers underscored the need for enhanced coordination among member parliaments to promote regional stability and practical cooperation on security and development issues. The Asia Pacific Group discussions stressed parliamentary engagement as a complement to diplomatic channels and a means to build consensus on shared challenges.

Senator Amir Waliuddin Chishti received endorsement from the Asia Pacific Group for membership of the Inter-Parliamentary Union Committee on Health. The endorsement recognizes his commitment to public health and is expected to strengthen parliamentary contributions to international cooperation on health policy within the IPU framework.

In line with Pakistan’s ongoing austerity measures, members of parliament, including those on the national delegation, attended the IPU Assembly at their own expense. Delegates said this decision reflects a conscious effort to ensure prudent use of public resources while maintaining active international parliamentary representation.

The meeting concluded with a reaffirmed resolve by the Asia Pacific Group to intensify collaboration among member parliaments and to play a proactive role within the IPU, with Pakistan reaffirming its readiness to contribute to regional peace and cooperative initiatives.
