Preparations are underway for the National Junior Championship 2026, which will be formally opened on June 7 at the Qayyum Sports Complex in Peshawar. Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Chief Minister Sohail Afridi is scheduled to inaugurate the event, which will bring together young athletes from across Pakistan.
Adviser to the Chief Minister on Sports and Youth Affairs Taj Muhammad Khan Tarand spoke to the media about the championship while Director General Sports Tashfeen Haider and Director Operations Jamshed Baloch were also present during the briefing. The organisers say the Junior Championship aims to showcase emerging talent and encourage wider participation in provincial and national sport.
The event is being held under the Directorate General of Sports Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and will feature 952 male and female competitors representing all four provinces and various government departments. The scale of participation reflects a renewed focus on youth development and competitive opportunity across the country.
Competitions will include squash, table tennis, athletics, badminton, karate and volleyball. Separate events for male and female players have been arranged in each discipline, while volleyball will be contested by men only. Squash matches are scheduled to take place from June 3 to June 5, and other sports will be contested between June 8 and June 10.
Taj Muhammad Khan Tarand urged young participants to view the Junior Championship as a chance to demonstrate their abilities and to work with dedication to bring honour to Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and their home provinces. He said the provincial government, under the leadership of Chief Minister Sohail Afridi, is committed to using available resources to provide equal and improved sporting opportunities for the youth.
Organisers describe the tournament not just as a competition but as a platform to unite promising athletes from across Pakistan, polish their skills and prepare them for higher levels of competition. Local sports officials expect the Junior Championship to play a key role in identifying and nurturing the next generation of national players.
