Islamabad: The Senate was informed that the current President and CEO of Telecom Foundation is drawing a net monthly salary of Rs1,006,790, along with an 1800cc car, driver, 500 litres of petrol every month, medical allowance, mobile phone ceiling and residential landline reimbursement. The details were placed before the House in response to a question by Senator Anusha Rahman Ahmad Khan, who also asked when the salaries of Telecom Foundation employees were last revised.

The information was shared during the Senate question answer session after Senator Anusha Rahman Ahmad Khan asked the Minister for Information Technology and Telecommunications about the appointment, contract term and salary package of the current President and CEO of Telecom Foundation.

In the official reply, Minister for Information Technology and Telecommunications Ms. Shaza Fatima Khawaja stated that the current President and CEO of Telecom Foundation was appointed on July 19, 2019. His contract term will expire on July 18, 2028.

According to the reply, the CEO’s current salary package includes the provision of an 1800cc car with driver and 500 litres of petrol per month. He is presently drawing a net monthly salary of Rs1,006,790.

The Senate was further informed that the CEO is also entitled to two gross salaries per year as medical allowance. In addition, he receives a mobile phone ceiling of Rs5,000 and reimbursement of residential landline expenses at actual cost.

The salary package details have raised attention because the question came at a time when public sector salaries and benefits remain an important issue for employees and taxpayers. The disclosure shows that the head of Telecom Foundation enjoys a high value package, including cash salary and official facilities.

On the salaries of Telecom Foundation employees, Ms. Shaza Fatima Khawaja informed the Senate that employee salaries were last revised in October 2022. This revision came after a gap of seven years, as the previous revision had taken place in 2015.

The ministry also stated that during the period from 2015 to 2022, the government revised Basic Pay Scales three times, effective from July 2015, July 2017 and July 2022. However, Telecom Foundation employees received their salary revision only in October 2022 after a long delay.

The Senate reply shows a clear contrast between the detailed salary package of the President and CEO and the delayed salary revision for employees. While the CEO’s package includes a monthly salary of over Rs1 million and several facilities, employees had to wait seven years for a salary revision.

The matter is important because Telecom Foundation is linked to the public sector and its salary structure is a matter of public interest.
